Al-Qaeda commander 'killed' in Pakistan
Head of group's operation in Pakistan and
Afghanistan reportedly among five killed in
drone strike.
A drone strike in Pakistan's North
Waziristan region has reportedly killed at
least five people, including a senior al-
Qaeda commander.
Umar Farooq, head of the group's
operations in Pakistan and Afghanistan,
was reportedly among those killed in the
air strike on Sunday.
Two missiles fired from a drone hit a
compound in the village of Khara Tanga in
the Datta Khel area, two Pakistani
intelligence officials said.
"There is [suspicion] that an important
commander was within the compound
when missiles struck but this is yet to be
verified," one of the intelligence officials
told AP news agency.
The strike also wounded two fighters, they
said.
On Saturday, another al-Qaeda leader,
Adnan Shukrijumah, was killed in a raid.
Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder, reporting from
Islamabad, said Farooq had started as a
spokesman for the group but rose to
prominence quickly.
The Pakistani military launched a major
offensive in the district in June and says it
has killed more than 1,560 fighters so far,
with 125 soldiers losing their lives.
"About 800,000 people have had to flee
because of the ongoing military operation,"
our correspondent said.
