Jose Mourinho hits out at time-wasting ball boys as Chelsea's unbeaten run ends at Newcastle
An angry Jose Mourinho hit out at the
St James's Park ball boys for time-
wasting after Chelsea's unbeaten run
came to an end with a 2-1 defeat at
Newcastle.
A pair of second-half goals from
Newcastle substitute Papiss Cissé
meant the Premier League leaders were
denied a club record 24th game without
defeat.
Insisting his side did not deserve to
lose, Mourinho instead laid the blame
for the defeat at the hands of the ball
boys.
"We wanted to play a lot more football
but that was not possible because of
things that I thought didn't belong in top
level football any more," said the
Chelsea manager when interviewed on
BTSport.
"The ball goes out, it doesn't come back
and the ball boys run away. But no
complaints."
When asked to elaborate on the actions
of the ball boys, Mourinho replied: "You
didn't see that?
"The ball disappeared every time. We
want to play but there is no ball. Then
when the ball comes back there is
another ball. Even during extra time
they keep doing the same thing.
"It is very difficult for the referee to
deal with that because the referee
cannot punish any player.
"It's the kind of strategy that
unfortunately is still part of the game.
"We were very unlucky. We did not
deserve this result, but we have to
accept it and move on."
Mourinho's comments were all the more
surprising given the home side's anger
when the fourth official indicated six
minutes of injury time would be added
at the end of the match.
Speaking about the added time, Alan
Pardew said: "I was very disappointed
with the six minutes. Talk about Fergie
time - that was definitely Mourinho
time."
The Newcastle manager added: "For us
it was a special day. It was a really
team effort to beat the best team in
Europe.
"They are a consistently great side and
they will take some stopping to win the
league but today is our day and we
really enjoyed it."
